So Vacation season is upon us and I wanted to share some of my top travel saving tips with you guys and how I travel to places like Paris Thailand and the Caribbean. Many times people think foreign destinations or frequent travel is out of their reach but it really isn’t, it is all a matter of planning, saving and research, research, research! The all that research can be fun loves it is a part of your journey before you arrive at your destination. The excitement that builds when you plan your excursions and what you will eat and where will you stay!
Know before you go-
So step one I am a travel blogger meaning I document all my trips be it as it may even just two hours away from the big apple to Philly. I treat each new destination and some old as I’ve never been there before. That means researching the best places to eat via Yelp.com or Tripadvisor.co. I want to know what the people think and you can count on your friends and family for this advice too. Basically learn from their trials and errors. When people come to New York even if they do not know me they are asking for advice on where to stay and where to go and I love that! Now the second part of the research involves price hunting for the best prices on airfare and where to stay, often times if you book you airfare and hotel together the travel company will give you a pretty big discount, however with that said it’s not the only way to save money.
Ditch the hotel-
I have only rented with Airbnb twice however it can be a huge savings for lodging in almost any country! I rented a brand one bedroom new condo in LA steps away from the Hollywood walk of fame for about $125 a night with parking. The W hotel across the street goes for about $370 a night so that was a savings of about $1,225 after our 5 night stay, basically another trip! So I defineatly recommend Airbnb for saving a pretty penny, most places come with towels and toiletries so you are not missing our on much from the hotel, I even had a washer and dryer in my unit! If you want to still go the hotel route, my favorite websites for hotel and airfare travel are Bookit.com, cheapcaribbean.com. europeandestnations.com and of course expedia.com, I ca not and will not recommend Travelocity! I had an awful booking experience with them recently.
Fly high not dry-
As for booking separate airfare my go to site is https://matrix.itasoftware.com/ Powered by Google.com you cannot book directly there however you can see most major airlines not just sponsored airlines like Kayak.com and Travelocity give you. So jot down the info and go directly to the Airline and sign up for rewards and book your flight. I cannot stress signing up for the airlines rewards programs enough. For instance on my last trip to Thailand, I fly with Emirates United, and picked up a tip that an upgrade could be possibly with I was a rewards member. So I did and upon check-in I requested if there was an upgrade available to which I was given! This was a major blessing on a 14 hour flight, 5 star service for free! So do yourself a favor and signup and ask you never know!
Going Up On a Tuesday…
Now I have been told that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to fly the fares will be cheapest therefore I frequently travel these days the better savings. This tip worked for me recently when I booked my trip to Mexico, my boyfriend and I had originally said 5 nights 6 days leave on a Wednesday come back on a Monday but we really wanted another day L so after checking the airfare to return on a Tuesday instead we were able to save another 350, basically an free night at another hotel and one extra day in paradise, I mean you cannot go wrong!
Girls Just Wanna Have Funds-
Now for booking excursions and things to do when you’re in your destination, I am a planner by nature so I normally love to have everything planned out before I go. So if you are traveling local do check Groupon and Living Social for up to half off on things like helicopter rides in Vegas and NY, top notch restaurants, and tours! If you are traveling internationally websites like Viator offer tours and excursions to places as far as Australia. Most hotels offer breakfast either as part of your stay or as a small addition to your bill, I recommend taking advantage of that as its usually cheaper and really convenient to have a quick breakfast and have the rest of the day to explore. I usually budget out for lunch and dinner as well finding mom and pop places to eat for lunch or look for places with specials and then splurge for dinner a few nights where you can dress up and feel spoiled!
Ballin on a Budget-
Another huge money saver is to travel to places in the off season most places have one I went to Thailand in the off season and stood at a 5-star resort and saved about half off my trip. I know this is not always practical you might not want to go to Toronto in December but if you are going to some place like Mexico or Thailand where it is pretty much warm year round you should be fine and save a dime.
I Get Around-
Another money saver when in places like Paris, Rome, London or NY or LA opt for mass transit to get you around, it is safe and if you buy a multiday pass it is much cheaper than taking cabs everywhere. I even recommend getting the hop on-hop off bus pass to get in as much sightseeing as possible, I did this in Barcelona and Rome and it worked wonderfully.
So there you have it all my tips for traveling the world on a budget and saving as much as possible. So the next time you see your favorite instagrammer living it up halfway around the world just know she’s not lucky… but crafty, planned saved and made it happen. 😉
